Snow Again

Snow started to fall here in the north.  It settled and froze overnight.  By mid morning yesterday the snow looked wet, but we didn't test the theory by going out on slippery pavements or use the car.  There are sure to be icy patches on the roads.

More snow continues to fall, hasn't stopped and gets deeper and deeper by the day.  (It's now Friday).

I've shared snow photos before, but for the record here are the ones I've taken from windows in our house over the last few days.

The daffodils and irises are covered in a layer of snow.  The tulips that are just breaking through the earth in their pots will, no doubt, survive and give us pleasure as they bloom when the Spring finally arrives.

I rescued the daffodils, arranged them in a vase and placed them in the front bay window.

The covered yard is a useful place to over-winter our many pot plants. Tomato plants are stored on indoor window sills where they get warmth, light and a drink of water when necessary.

Neighbours have been out and about, but we stay put for now.  We're thankful for a roof over our heads, food in the store cupboard and hobbies that interest us. We think of those who are having to get to and from work and all who are not doing so well in difficult circumstances.
Take care everyone.
Thank you for coming by, Linda.

Our Week Mid December 2022

As you can see the snow hasn't melted in our garden (photos taken early this morning), but the sun is strong and there are blue skies instead of clouds laden with the icy, white stuff).  It's still very cold so we're thankful for the central heating system.
We've had our visitors (grandson no 3 and his partner) who came to stay before travelling on to the other grandmother who lives further north in the city of York.  The motorways and even the side roads in our region seem to be passable, but there's snow on higher ground especially on the moors.

Yesterday Sam drove us to Low Bradfield which is not far from where we live.  We had a warm drink in the Schoolrooms Café before going to the nearest pub situated on flat ground which was a short walk away.  We had a sandwich lunch before driving back home.  By the time we arrived at our house it was getting dark and we said our goodbyes before the couple went on to York.

Agden Beck, Low Bradfield

A village resident who has the responsibility for looking after the various types of duck that swim in Agden Beck arrived to feed them.  They mainly stay in the walled compound and they're a well known attraction.

The former village schoolroom building is now a café and gift shop.

We had lunch in the cosy pub.

We're hoping that the couple will be able to come and join us and our local family for lunch on Sunday on their way back down to Berkshire.  It'll depend on the weather, of course.
Thank you for your comments left on my last blog post and for your visit here.  There's still plenty to do in preparation for Christmas.  Thank you for coming by.

Our weekend

As you can see the snow arrived on Saturday night along with freezing fog.  We're snowed in and, of course, local family members living on even higher ground in our hilly city cannot get out to work as the side roads are icy.  Gritters cannot come out because of the fog and ice and the snow and ice won't melt in these freezing temperatures. We have provisions and shelter so we are managing so far.  We think of those in the same situation and hope everyone stays safe.

That's all for now, speak again soon.

Recent Days

Each day this week we've had a range of different types of weather; from dry, but cloudy skies to wet and windy.  Autumn is transitioning into Winter.  The good news is that Mr P's chest x-ray result was clear and we're able to get out-and-about again as he's feeling much better.  We were advised to continue with the covid vaccination Winter booster when Mr P went to see the general practitioner doctor.  The appointment is tomorrow and thankfully at our local general practice clinic.  Mr P also has a physio consultation at the hospital next week so in between we'll be resting as much as possible.

I had a quick look around the walled garden in the park.  It's surprising what flowers can still be seen, mainly hydrangea bushes and chrysanthemums now,  sheltered by the surrounding old walls.

On Wednesday looking out of the back living room picture window I caught sight of a tree surgeon who was obviously pruning some of the branches of the huge cherry tree in our neighbour's garden. He had all the necessary safety equipment and was using a rope and pulley system to swing from branch to branch.  It was just as well he did some of the work on that day as the following day we had heavy rain storms at night and during the day.

There are berries in abundance everywhere.  The robin and other birds are still finding shelter and food in the next-door-neighbour's hawthorn tree.

We were sent photos of a firework event at Kenilworth Castle which was held on the 5th November (Bonfire Night).

Needless to say our heavy curtains are drawn every evening now to keep us warm and we could hear the bangs from local firework displays. We think of the animals who get frightened because of sensitive hearing. I'm sure the family in Kenilworth enjoyed the spectacular firework display at this historical venue on that evening. It's fun for families to watch such an event so long as it's well organised and safe for spectators.

As for us, I'm thankful for Mr P's improved health and the shelter of a warm and cosy house when the weather isn't so good.
Thank you for your visit.  Have a good day and a peaceful weekend.
