The David Mellor Design Centre, near Hathersage, Derbyshire

Today I'm looking back at the days when we went for a drive into Derbyshire and visited the David Mellor Centre which has a café, a kitchen shop, workshops and a permanent exhibition of quality cutlery and other products of national importance designed by David Mellor and currently his son, Corin. We spent quite a time looking around and buying some items for ourselves, family and friends in the country kitchen shop.  The small café was busy on this New Year's Eve day so we decided to go to a local inn instead. I'm sure we'll be back as it would be good to take visitors who are interested in general design, cooking and kitchen items and I would like to go on a workshop tour.

The purpose-built Round House Workshop designed for David Mellor by Sir Michael Hopkins.  It's built in the local gritstone and is set in an area of natural beauty. Visitors can take a tour to see the highly skilled cutlery making process.
David Mellor was born in Sheffield and trained originally as a silversmith. Due to his international reputation for product design and manufacture he won many awards.  Corin Mellor has now succeeded his father as Creative Director continuing the tradition of innovative design work in this specialist field.

We found the above exhibits interesting such as the church commissions especially those for Sheffield Anglican Cathedral and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. Daughter D was interested in the car as 1966 was her birth year.

Exhibits of the public signs, seats, the national traffic light system, street lights, mail box, litter bins in the grounds of the Design Centre that were all designed by David Mellor are still in use today.
