Hello everyone! My gardening report for the end of October will be short. Everything tender has been brought into the covered yard now. In the vegetable raised beds there are broccoli plants, cabbages, leeks and parsnips. The tomatoes have been gathered, eaten or bottled. We've left the sweet peppers in the covered yard on the plants for now. Husband bottled some sweet peppers in olive oil - the first time we've tried this method of preserving them. We've had some French beans from the new plant that was growing in the covered yard and now the plant will be cleared out and the planter will be used to grow daffodils. The garlic bulbs have been lifted, dried and stored. You might be surprised to know that we're not great lovers of garlic, but my husband grows some enough for our needs. I'm sure there are many other aspects to gardening at this time of the year which I haven't mentioned.
The last week of October (above)
Today 1st November - Suddenly the leaves on the fig tree have yellowed and started dropping over night. There are many figs still on the tree that haven't matured. They'll never ripen now, but earlier on we enjoyed the ones that did.
We went to the local garden centre nursery some time ago and bought seeds and bulbs. They were more expensive than regular high street stores, but there was a good selection. I bought some tulips and a few hyacinths which I hope to give as gifts at Christmas, although I'm behind with planting them. More daffodils and tulips were bought at the local Wilko shop and these have also been planted along with some that were lifted and stored at the end of the growing season earlier in the year. It'll be interesting to see how they all do next year. I'm savouring this season and each day as it unfolds.
