We're always happy to see my husband's family when we arrive in his home village and very grateful for everything they do for us when we're not there; the necessary paperwork involved with owning an Italian property, looking after the vines and the house etc. As well as milk, there was fresh produce awaiting us and some wine from last year's grape harvest. Together with store cupboard provisions we're able to eat well.
Next day we went to our nephew's delicatessen in the village for lunch supplies. He specialises in local and regional produce.
There are plenty of varieties of cooked meats, cheeses, olives, pastas, biscuits, as well as regional wines to choose from to supplement the mainly self-sufficient diet of the locals and for us there's nothing better than a lunch of bread (ciabatta), cheese (provolone, ricotta), fruit from the garden and our own wine or water. (We drink mineral water or get fresh drinking water from the fountains near the monastery in the high mountains which is located near the water source).
