Hathersage, Derbyshire

Our drive to Hathersage took us on a roundabout route passed Ladybower Reservoir since we can't walk straight across the moors to the village as the writer Charlotte Bronte used to do during her stay with her friend at the vicarage.  The purple heather is in bloom at this time of the year.

We drove straight to one of the pubs in the village where we dropped off Mr P before walking up the hill to the church.  The pub is an old one often used by travellers who used to cross the moors taking goods by pack saddle ponies to towns in the region. These days there's a restaurant menu and we certainly enjoyed our lunch.

There are views across to the moors and the hills surrounding the village and pretty gardens among the houses.

The climb up the hill was a good workout for me!  We stopped by the church entrance gate.

Under this old yew tree in the churchyard is a grave known as "Little John's Grave".  Whoever is buried there was a tall person as the grave is very long and well kept by local historians.  There are many legends about Robin Hood and his Merrie Men. They  supposedly lived in the forests in the next county of Nottinghamshire including one of his followers, Little John.  There are many place names associated with Robin Hood, a fictitious character based on a real person. Our own village in the Loxley Valley is one such although far from Nottingham. People wandered far and wide in those days.

In the pub, The Scotsman's Pack, there's a photo of the cottage in which this person lived.

It's a while since I've visited St Michael and All Angels Parish Church and it was good to show Daughter D around before returning to the pub for some lunch.

Not a very good photo due to the waiter pointing the camera towards the light of the window, but it was a record of a good day out with Mr P and Daughter D before heading back home by way of the Strines Reservoir and the moors.

Thank you for visiting.  Have a good week!

Our weekend The Mellor Design Centre, Near Hathersage, Derbyshire

Mr P and I had an eventful weekend since Father's Day was on the Sunday and we had a combined celebration for our wedding anniversary at our local daughter's home.

On Saturday the weather was dull, but dry and warm so we ventured out for a drive into the Derbyshire countryside There are many places that we would like to return to, but decided on a trip to the David Mellor Design Centre kitchen shop and the Hathersage village area.  The last outing we had there was during the Christmas holidays 2019 when our daughter who lives in Berkshire came to stay.  Little did we know that in March 2020 we would be in lockdown dealing with a global pandemic.  The Design Museum and the cafĂ© are still closed, but the kitchen shop is open so we had a browse around.  I was looking for a large oven dish in readiness for entertaining our ever growing family once further restrictions are lifted.  This time I didn't see what I wanted, but I was glad to have visited as it's such a pleasant site surrounded by trees and shrubs with a good parking area up a drive well away from the road.

(Interior photos taken last visit)

We had not booked a table for lunch at the nearby pub, but we did have a drink before driving back home over the high ridges that overlook Hathersage village.

Foxgloves, ferns, yellow bedstraw, yellow rattle, clover and wild daisies are everywhere growing in the long grass.

The sky was overcast so the photos are not the best.

Sunday at our daughter's home.  Our granddaughter and boyfriend made the pizza dough and the suppli in advance ready for the celebration party.  Our daughter has a new pizza oven that was tried out for the first time.  We also enjoyed our daughter's home made fruit and nut cake with Prosecco wine.  We were able to sit outside without worrying about cold, wet weather and it was actually quite a warm afternoon even though the sun stayed behind the clouds.  Good memories were made during this happy get together with family and friends.

I hope you also had a good weekend.  Thank you for your visit.
