Since my last blog post I'm glad to say that the weather has improved. This morning we had to drive to another area of the city which gave us an opportunity to visit a wood and an old abbey church.
I was hoping that the native English bluebells were still in flower in their natural habitat. Ecclesall Wood which is an ancient woodland situated in the south-west of the city is an area where they grow undisturbed and I did not have to go far from the parking area on the main road to see them.
There was a lot of wild garlic as well as wild white Star of Bethlehem flowers growing in between the bluebells.
We parked in a country lane next to Beauchief Abbey and thankfully we were able to go inside as a walking group had just visited and the lady who had shown the visitors around was still there. She welcomed us in, offered us refreshments and stopped to tell us all about the abbey church which still holds regular services.
I'll share more about the abbey and the interior of the remaining small chapel next time.
