Bakewell, Derbyshire

the 13th century packhorse bridge over the River Wye

It was an action-packed weekend as the local granddaughter and her partner met up with the Berkshire grandson and his partner. There was a morning of fishing - local grandson joined them - followed by rock climbing up on an escarpment called Stanage Edge.  Needless to say I didn't join them for the sporting pursuits!  However, on Sunday visiting grandson drove us over the county border into Derbyshire.  The sun was shining.  We went up hills and down dales passing through winding wooded lanes where bluebells were out in abundance.  Birds were hovering in the sky on the moorland stretches and then we stopped at our destination, the small market town of Bakewell.  There are many independent small shops so we were happy just to wander and take a look at what was on offer.  We came away with hand made fudge, some Bakewell tartlets and the two girls bought for themselves small soft toy hedgehogs as souvenirs of the day.  In the information centre there were leaflets advertising events and local places of interest that I would like to visit later on this year.  We had a sandwich lunch in a pub garden and then walked along the river bank before heading back to Sheffield.  Below are some random photos of our day out (snapped when I had a moment).

I thought the vegan fruit jellies an interesting addition and a sign of the present times.

The water was so clear I could see trout in the river.

The beaks on these ducks had a strange shape probably for shovelling for food on the river bed.

In recent years there has been a fashion to attach padlocks with the names of visitors
onto the railings of the bridge.

Another Family Outing

We enjoyed another outing yesterday. Our Berkshire daughter is now staying with us for a few weeks. Our drive over to Bakewell to meet up with our son, wife and grandson was scenic as usual, but quite misty in places.  There was a slight drizzle which is called 'mizzle' here, being a combination of mist and drizzly rain.  However, by the time we got to Bakewell it had cleared and we had a good chat over a tasty lunch.  Our son went off to queue up with the usual face covering involved to get a couple of Bakewell Puddings and I had a quick wander by the river and then took a short cut through some beautiful public gardens to get a photo of the parish church, All Saints.  I didn't linger as the family were waiting back at a car park, but it was good to be back in Bakewell again.

The Bakewell Pudding:  Bakewell claims to be the home of the authentic Bakewell Pudding. The recipe was originally something of an accidental invention of the 1860s.  A visitor to the Rutland Arms (then called The White Horse Inn) ordered a strawberry tart, but the one that the cook made was enjoyed by the guest and later it started to be sold in The Old Bakewell Pudding Shop.  Ingredients include puff pastry, raspberry jam and a paste made from almonds. The Bakewell Tart that has icing and cherries on the top is a variation, but we shall enjoy the traditional Bakewell Pudding (pictured above) with a cup of tea today.

Thank you for your visit.  I hope you have a good week.
