This week I've been into Sheffield city centre several times as this is where many of my interest groups take place and where I usually meet up with friends. On Monday I met a friend and we went to sign up for a day course in March on photography and painting that's being put on in the studies department of the central lending library in Tudor Square. Then we went for coffee and my friend gave me a refresher lesson on basic crocheting.
In the evening I had another try at making some Afghan squares using the instructions from an old book of crochet patterns. I must have kept it from when our daughters used to do a lot of crocheting. After being shown those basics the illustrations made more sense and the crocheting below is my first lot of experimental pieces. They're not perfect yet, but now I'll have a go at making something, possibly a blanket. I'll need to get some suitable yarn and work out the right tension. I wonder what yarn those of you who crochet use? We have a small craft shop in our local area and I shall probably go and buy some there. It's where I bought my wool for the scarf and I was pleased with the quality.

On Wednesday I was back in Sheffield as I went to the Ash Wednesday service to mark the beginning of Lent. Ever since moving to south Yorkshire Sheffield Anglican Cathedral has meant a lot to me because it's a place that's open during the day for quiet contemplation. Many of the other city churches and the R.C. Cathedral, St. Marie's, are also open and welcoming, which is a good thing. This was something I particularly appreciated in the early days of settling into a new area and a change of lifestyle as I got used to retirement. Afterwards I sat and listened to the organist playing a piece of music and it was a peaceful few moments before going out into the busy streets where there was extra hustle and bustle due to the week being the half term holiday for schools in the city.

The weather has been brighter and pleasanter when out and about. It has been good to see the occasional blue skies!
