January: the weather and gardening

In the last ten days we've had some stunning dawn skies, but also extreme weather conditions; more snow, sleet, strong winds and heavy rain. Some days we've had clear blue skies and it's been icy underfoot and on the roads, but it's been necessary to go out from time-to-time with the hope that we don't get more heavy snowfalls this month.

We're thankful that we have the high hedge surrounding our back garden as it has stopped the gale force winds from doing too much damage to the shrubs and rose bushes.  Bulb shoots are beginning to appear in the flower beds and pots whilst the tender plants, other bulbs and seedlings are in the covered yard and doing well. I'm looking forward to next month when the first of our various Spring bulbs should start to bloom.
