One of the enjoyable aspects of being in our Italian house is that I can see many interesting sights especially from a balcony or upstairs windows. Being Springtime the birds were very active and one day I spotted great tits flying in and out of the unused postbox that had been put in a retaining wall on the driveway before the entrance gate was installed. It's a good place for nesting activity because the box is never disturbed. When I went to get a closer look I could see that the birds had been dropping twigs inside until the space inside was filled up nearly to the slit at the top. Certainly I wanted them to continue undisturbed so my photos were taken from a distance, some of them when I had the cover of the pillared wall opposite the postbox. Perching on the bars of the closed gate a bird would fly swiftly into the slit before swooping away again. With plenty of scope for finding grubs around the garden and the land beyond these little birds seemed to favour the cypress trees. The evergreen leaves were a good cover for them as well as a source of food.
