Friday Bliss # 17: Castleton, Derbyshire and Low Bradfield, Yorkshire

Last Friday we took  a drive over the moors with visiting family ........

passed Ladybower Reservoir and along the Hope Valley to spend some time in Castleton.  He wanted to show his girlfriend some of the places we had often visited when he had come to stay for holidays with his mother. Castleton is a picturesque little town well known for the castle ruins, the mining of
the Blue John mineral (bands of purple-blue or yellow Derbyshire fluorite - bleu-jaune, blue-yellow).
In the UK it's only found at the Blue John Cavern or Treak Cliff Cavern located in the surrounding hills.  In the past the Blue John was made into precious ornaments and now a small amount is mined,  then fashioned into pieces of jewelry in the workshops and sold in the small shops belonging to the caverns.

We try to visit Castleton during the Christmas period.

We had a quick browse around the shops as the Christmas gift and ornamental items were on sale. I always get something to put away for future gifts or for use at home.  This year I bought two toughened glass coasters with a red and gold poppy pattern to add to a set of four.

We took a walk along Peakshole Water, a tributary of the River Noe that runs through Castleton.

We took a look in an antique/vintage emporium, but it was so full of quirky items we would have to return to take a better look when we have more time.

Then grandson S wanted to go and have a hot drink in the café of his choice where we've been before, but in the Summer time.

Since we were there last an extra room had been added onto the back to accommodate more visitors.

The garden (above) is a pleasant place to sit and have a cup of tea or coffee in the warmer months.

However, inside was warm and cosy, especially as the weather was getting colder and gloomier.
Back in our own locality we stopped by Agden Beck, Low Bradfield so that more photos could be taken by our visitors before returning home for that lunch of lasagna prepared beforehand so that it could just be popped in the oven to bake.

Our Christmas and New Year's Eve

On Christmas Day we went to our local daughter M's home for a traditional Christmas lunch of roast chicken with all the trimmings whilst our daughter M added a vegetarian option for herself. Afterwards we just relaxed and played games such as Pass the Parcel with the penguin parcel (below)

On Boxing Day our daughter D's eldest son, partner and her young daughter came to stay and his younger brother and girlfriend joined us the following day.  Not everyone could come for a visit due to work commitments, distance or being under the weather due to the 'flu, but we enjoyed some good times around the lunch table and even managed to go out for a walk in the countryside - more about that next time. Traditional Italian food featured such as lasagna, panettone (fruit variety and plain with prosecco cream filling) and Italian biscuits as well as fruit and a chocolate log sponge cake. On the Saturday our local daughter M, who had been working paediatric health visitor duties in the A & E department at a hospital in between the public holidays, joined her sister D along with M's two children for a lunch of  vegetable stew, baked potatoes and salad.

On New Year's Eve we spent the evening with daughter D who went home to Berkshire today. After D had cooked us a nice meal we relaxed, watched and waited for the New Year to come in with the help of the television live broadcast of the traditional count down to midnight and the firework display on London's River Thames Embankment.

Once more wishing you all the best as we journey on into 2019.
Linda :)

Looking back, looking forward

As the year comes to a close I have been looking back
at each month with gratitude for all the enjoyable moments
we've spent with family and friends. Being able to share
some aspects of my life here and there (UK and Italy)
with you, my blog friends, during 2018 has been a joy.
Wishing all of my blog friends a very healthy and peaceful New Year,
I look forward to meeting up with you once more in 2019.
