We've been happy to stay mainly at home this week as gardening has taken up our time, but yesterday we decided to go out for a lunch date in case the weather turned to rain as it can do quite suddenly because of our changeable English climate.
We both thought of going to one of the many reservoirs in our local area as being near the water on a sunny day can be very pleasant. Redmires Reservoirs are three large expanses of water on high ground with many public footpaths and places to sit and, therefore, a good option.
We drove up steep and winding lanes to get there. We stopped by an old iron bridge and walked along one of the paths by the stream that feeds into the reservoir. Although these particular reservoirs seem remote, residential homes are not far away. It's a popular place to come and walk the dog or have a picnic. Being man-made there are posters showing maps of the area and other information about how the place was flooded to make the reservoirs. Old stone pillars that were once on farmland are submerged deep in the water.
We drove along the road by the water until it wasn't possible to go any further as visitors then take the paths up to the moors or down to picnic places by the water. The paths were narrow. High grass, nettles and ferns made it more difficult to walk that way. The wider path by the stream was a better place to walk and take photos of the wild flowers. Apparently a visitor can see water voles and other endangered species in the area.
The water is very deep although at the moment there's less of it. Yesterday the shoreline looked exposed and wider than usual.
I didn't see any small mammals, but the wild flowers caught my attention. It was interesting to see purple betony, white dead nettles, wild geraniums, yellow vetch or toad flax, bramble flowers, many foxgloves as well as buttercups.
After the short walk we retraced our route and stopped at a country pub for our lunch break.
We enjoyed our lunch. Mr P had a steak with chipped potatoes, mushrooms, tomatoes and a side salad and I had wild mushroom ravioli with a rocket salad. After a look at the view of the farmland from the pub garden we headed home, this time going back down the winding hills and then along the Rivelin River valley road where the long avenue of mature trees provided a tunnel of greenery and shade for several miles.
Well. that's all for this week. Thank you for your visit. I hope that you have a good weekend!

Reservoirs are really nice places to visit my favourite is the Elan Valley in Wales
ReplyDeleteI think that you go there for a break away and the Elan Valley must be beautiful. I like going to Wales myself.
Deletewe have a resorvoir about 20 minutes from us, and it is a popular place for fisherman. there is nothing like the beauty of nature to lift our spirits. your outing had some of everything, water and green spaces and those lovely stone buildings I love so much. the little house with no roof, I would like to have in my back yard for me to use as a computer room, my home away from home, with a roof of course
ReplyDeleteReservoirs although owned by water companies are well maintained and open to the public. They're great places to walk around, observe water birds and nature in general. We have many in our area and each one is unique. I like it when we come across old iron bridges from the Victorian era or stone walls and buildings from past times.
DeleteLooks an amazing place for a visit, with all the dry weather i'm not surprised that the water level was down, although it could well have a top up if this weekends weather forecast is true
ReplyDeleteWe could do with rain to top up the reservoirs, garden water barrels and ponds. Rain showers refresh the plants and a cool breeze would be welcome too.
DeleteWhat a wonderful day! I confess, on a nice day Rick isn't in to taking long drives -- he'd rather be on his bike. And I love a good long drive with either a picnic or a stop for lunch like at that wonderful pub. We don't do it often enough. It certainly looks like you found some beautiful territory to explore and lovely blooms, too!
ReplyDeleteI'm pleased that you got away to your retreat cabin by a lake. Tranquil places are good for our well-being. Enjoy your time there Jeanie. We have beautiful countryside on our doorstep but a change of scene is beneficial too.
DeleteIt's good to see you're getting out and about to all sorts of lovely places after being stuck in for so long during the covid lockdowns. Every day there's another wildflower out or the butterflies are fluttering around, it's a joy and a pub lunch is the icing on the cake. Have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to get out and about again. After all the restrictions it's good to have the choice to travel. Thank you. Have a lovely weekend.
DeleteLovely photos of your walk. Great to be out and about and have lunch out too:)
ReplyDeleteThank you Rosie. It was a treat to go out for lunch after the short walk by the reservoir. I hope you're feeling better.
DeleteYou had such a lovely excursion Linda with delicious lunch also. I plan to make short trips in the neighbourhood, but not until it gets cooler. Happy Sunday.
ReplyDeleteIt was a good day out. I hope you get out for a few short trips. Enjoy! Thank you for coming for a visit. I'll come visit your blog again soon. Meanwhile have a nice day and a peaceful week.
DeleteHow super to see you and Mr. P. in these photos. You took us to another delightful area, and I could step into your photos quite happily :) Thank you Linda!
ReplyDeleteThank you Denise. I'm happy that you enjoyed seeing where we went on that day. Redmires is not too far away, a lovely drive through the countryside, a walk by the water and then lunch made it special.
