After doing our weekly provisions shopping yesterday I walked to the bridge and took some photos of the River Loxley
The river water flows along the Loxley Valley from reservoirs in the area including our local Damflask Reservoir, meets the River Rivelin at Malin Bridge before continuing on down the Rivelin Valley or on to the River Don in the Don Valley.
As you can imagine there are several bridges and weirs in this area of Sheffield.
This is the bridge by the mill in the second photo taken during a month in the Summer. There's an island in the middle of the river called Watersmeet Island.
(Above archive picture shows what it used to look like). It's a haven for wildlife as the area has been given over to trees and bushes.
The island continues to be looked after by a volunteer group.
There's a narrow track road that leads to residential houses along the Rivelin Valley and on the extreme right is a hilly road which goes to a village called Stannington. That's where we shall get our 'flu jab next week at one of the general practice surgeries we belong to. Covid booster vaccinations are not available yet although we are eligible. Mr P's second chest x-ray that he had recently has come back to the GP as a normal result.
Routine shopping can be pleasant when a supermarket is located in a quiet area. The supermarket was not crowded yesterday either so all good.
Have a lovely weekend! Our granddaughter and boyfriend are visiting in the morning for coffee and a chat and our local daughter is coming in the afternoon for a cup of tea and cake. :)
yay for the family visit and we have no beauty to take photos of while shopping, just miles and miles of roads and houses and CARS. we have to drive 10 miles or more to find outdoor beauty.. forgot, there is a park 3 miles away.. so much beauty, glad your shopping is done and so happy for the good xray
ReplyDeleteWe need a car to get to the big supermarkets for a big shop. We can walk to small shops for fresh food and other items. Every outing is a photo opportunity and fortunately there's always something interesting to see and share. We are relieved Mr P's chest x-ray was normal and he is feeling better after he had the chest infection.
DeleteWhat a beautiful town, the river is so scenic. I thought you would have had your booster jab by now, I had mine a couple of weeks ago along with my Flu which is the first one I have had since the 1980's
ReplyDeleteOur GP is behind with Covid boosters probably lack of the vaccine. We don't mind as Mr P has not been well with breathing problems and I can't have flu and booster at the same time. We're happy to wait and space these vaccines out, get them when called.
DeleteI love the stonework on these old buildings. Another lovely area you are sharing with us, a heavenly haven for wildlife :) Happy to hear Mr. P’s second chest x-ray came back normal. We have had our booster shots, and I do hope you can get yours soon. Next week we will be getting our flu shots. I do enjoy shopping when it's not chaotic. It looks like it will be a happy weekend with visits from your family. I know they will be very much enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteThere are some great trails along by the rivers in the area. The maintenance group are appreciated for creating cover for wildlife. It's good that you've had your boosters and will soon have your 'flu shots. Stay well.
DeleteYou live in such a pretty area with all that water around. I like how they kept the mill wheel in the converted apartments and that there are volunteers to keep an eye on the wildlife. Glad Mr P had good results and good luck with those flu jabs!
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to look at the archived old pictures and compare 'then and now'. It's pleasing to know that creatures are encouraged to find a home on Watersmeet Island and in the woods along by the rivers whilst many examples of Sheffield's past heritage can still be seen.

DeleteI do enjoy getting to know where other bloggers live and you included! The only place I know in Sheffield is Robin Hood Airport...sorry it is Doncaster Airport now, isn't it? That is where I used to fly to and from to visit my sister who lived in Lincolnshire. I always thought a very neat airport not so crazy as Gatwick or Heathrow :-). I see from your trips out and about that it is a lovely area and very worth exploring and most particularly the rivers (you're lucky if you get a trickle of a river hereabouts!) and that little island; such a good idea that it is a refuge for all wildlife in the area. Enjoy your visits from the family :-). Amanda x
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoy seeing where we live on the north west outskirts of Sheffield. I imagine Doncaster Airport was a convenient one when visiting your sister in Lincolnshire. It's a long way from the area where we live on the border with Derbyshire. We can get to Italy Rome Airport from Manchester Airport, although that hasn't been possible since before the pandemic. One bonus of living in the UK is that most rivers are full of water. A walk by a lake, reservoir or river is a pleasure. There are steps down to the island in the river. I was happy just to read about the history on the information board and enjoy the woods.

ReplyDeleteResidential accommodation in a converted old mill would be interesting to live in especially as there are few new builds in the picturesque Loxley Valley. The 'flu jab went well although we had to wait outside in the cold in a long queue. At least today there wasn't the snowy weather conditions forecast.

ReplyDeleteThank you Dina. We give thanks that we live in an area where we can see beauty all around in the woods and old buildings. Some of Sheffield's heritage can be appreciated and celebrated too. I'm glad that I'm spacing out the vaccinations as I've not been well since having the 'flu vaccine (a reaction to it).
