Advent: A time to pause and reflect

Yesterday evening the first of the four candles on our Advent wreath was lit to mark the beginning of our preparations for the Christmas festivities. Then the one in the middle, representing the Light of Christ, will be lit on Christmas Eve. There are different ideas about the making of the Advent wreath with various symbolic aspects to it, but the most important reason in our family to follow the tradition is that it helps us remember that at Christmas we shall be commemorating the nativity of Jesus. Candlelight to dispel the darkness is beautiful and I find having the Advent wreath as a centre piece in our home uplifting during this time especially as we don't start decorating the rest of the house until nearer to the festival, apart from cards that have been sent to us, of course.

  14. I really do need to get back in the habit of setting out a nativity wreath. A lovely way to be reminded of the reason for all of this.
