Bank Holiday Monday - a family picnic by the water. Seaside or lakeside? Sometimes we 'go with the flow' and as the grandchildren wanted to take a pedalo one a stretch of water we decided that a drive that would not be too far away would be better than attempting to take busy routes to coastal resorts such as Scarborough and Whitby. We went to Rother Valley Country Park, which the children have been taken to by friends of the family and which seemed like a good option.
Many families had the same idea! Fortunately it's a huge area so there was room for all and plenty of water activities on offer, places to picnic or have a bar-b-q or take a walk by the lake. After the picnic my husband and I just sat on the grassy bank and watched everyone enjoying the water sports. Our family went out in a pedalo so there was something happening for everyone on a beautiful, sunny day.
Rother Valley Country Park is also a nature reserve. There are quieter areas for seeing wild life although many of the water birds - swans, ducks and Canada geese were congregating in places where they would be fed.
However, I spotted a couple of geese with their goslings staying near the cover of the reeds and, of course, very protective of the young ones. That was one of the highlights of the day for me as well as the good weather, of course!
